In short

When should you see a specialist?

A pure tone audiogram measures the softest sounds you can hear at different pitches. Combined with impedance audiometry, it shows the type and degree of hearing loss and whether a hearing aid, medicine or surgery is the right option.

  • You often ask people to repeat themselves
  • The TV volume bothers others
  • Hearing is worse in one ear
  • A child does not respond to sounds or speech is delayed

FAQ

Common questions

How long does a hearing test take?

A standard pure tone and impedance test usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. BERA takes longer, and young children may need to be asleep for it.

Do I need a doctor's examination before buying a hearing aid?

It is a good idea. An ENT examination checks for wax, infection or conditions that can be treated medically or surgically, and the audiogram guides the right type of hearing aid.

Can I try a hearing aid before buying?

Yes. A hearing aid trial lets you experience amplification in real situations before choosing a device.
