Allergy clinic

Allergy clinic: find out what you are allergic to

Constant sneezing, a runny or blocked nose and itchy eyes often have a specific trigger. The allergy clinic combines a detailed history, examination and a skin prick test for 83 allergens, so treatment can target the cause rather than only the symptoms.

In short

When should you see a specialist?

A skin prick test places tiny amounts of common allergens on the forearm and checks for a reaction after about 15 to 20 minutes. It helps identify triggers such as dust mites, pollen, moulds, animal dander and some foods.

  • Sneezing or a runny nose most days
  • Symptoms that return every season
  • Allergy along with asthma or sinus problems
  • Medicines help only briefly

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need to stop medicines before a skin prick test?

Usually antihistamines are stopped for a few days before the test because they can hide the reaction. The clinic will tell you exactly what to stop and for how long when you book.

What is allergy immunotherapy?

Immunotherapy gives gradually increasing doses of the allergens you react to, so the immune system becomes less sensitive over time. It is a long-term treatment, usually continued for a few years.

Is the skin prick test painful?

Not really. It feels like light pricks on the skin. Positive results may itch for a short while and settle on their own.
